  • Does it have adjustable gibs, as on a mill ?

    Was idle intended to keep the cylinder at operating temperature when using steam ?

  • Yeah, you can kinda see the wedges with adjusting bolts on the top of the guides.

    "Idling" give better control because the hammer is already in motion. You can also get a harder blow using just the treadle, you catch it on the way up and it sends it higher and brings it down full tilt.

  • A very interesting video. Steam hammers,and in particular the skilled use of them,is a fast dying art nowadays. A great tool - they look brutal and raw,yet with truly skilled operators can produce work you wouldn't even dream could be done.
