A leisurely travelogue across the Yorkshire Dales, following the River Wharfe from Ilkley to Hubberholme. The film depicts the extraordinary diversity of the countryside, from the rock faces in Ilkley to the Roman wells and cottages to the haunting ruins of Barden tower and the beautiful parks. Other landmarks featured include Bolton Bridge, the Cavendish Memorial, the stocks at Appletreewick and the Red Lion Hotel. A few locals also appear, although most do not seem to notice the camera.

The title, incidentally, is borrowed from the popular Yorkshire folk song, and literally means 'on Ilkley Moor without a hat'. (Alex Davidson)

  • Lol! Mea Culpa casetone! A vastly amusing response viz-a-viz the tea cosy!

  • The stocks are still there (and working) just next to the Craven Arms pub in the village.

I live in the village. Great clip. Thanks!

  • The stocks are still there- just next to the Craven Arms pub. I live in the village!

    Great video!

  • Superb - I grew up around there and worked in some of the pubs featured. Thanks for putting this up - what is the source of this material? I'd love to see some more.

  • The Stocks, as an official form of punishment ended in the 19th century. However there are stocks and pillories still dotted all around the UK. The shot in the movie was just an illustration of how they were used (you can see they are not locked) and to give the scene some movement, I guess. Few people can pass an old set of stocks or pillories without getting in them! Never trust a man who, when left alone in a room with a tea cosy, does not try it on.

  • Was the stocks footage faked, or did they still use stocks when this was filmed? Fake surely.

  • Thank you for sharing this magnificent piece of history
