There are still guards at Checkpoint Charlie. They don't stop anybody from crossing through but they do ask for a 1 Euro donation.

I already got my east german visa. Took just about a month. I think you have to be extremely incredibly good looking to become an east german.

As someone who served in the US Army in Berlin during the Cold War I find this, well....just pitiful and frankly a little insulting. The Germans can do what they wish. Its theirs now but as for anything historical about this,.. well its just bad. Glad the country is reunified and the Cold War is a thing of the past. If they're not going to to do it right better not to have anything at all and let it fade away. My 2 cents.

It wasn't torn down. The newer building was moved to the American Sector museum compound on Clayalle. The one standing now is a mock up of the first wooden building placed there in 1961.

The real Charlie Checkpoint was torn down after German Reunification. What you were at was a tourist attraction with Germans in US uniforms. They charged money because that's how they make a living.
