I think the shame for me is that we have movies now that are not worth the ten or twelve dollars you pay to see (in spite of the expensive budget). Yet, here was a movie shown on television and I'd pay TWENTY dollars or more to see it in the movie theaters. I wish newer movies had the spirit and sincerity that this one has.

I am 60 years old and a fat 315 lb. diabetic. I saw this in'79 and was svelte, fast and thin. This GREAT flick inspired me then and this wonderful clip forces me to get out there and have a future. We old dogs still got something of ourselves left. Get out and live, you old hippies. Run. Walk. To the wall one more time. Run that Jericho mile, Baby!

this is one of my favorite movies of all time & i cant get it without paying an arm& a leg for it. thats a real bummer. but for you runners (like me) out there we can still get "Without Limits", the steve prefontane story. go out, get & watch it.... i own it but i'd really like to have The Jericho Mile!!!!

what's really ashamed is neither Davies NOR Lickety Spilt would represent the USA in the Olympics in Moscow as the boycott kept them home

Good made for tv movies are VERY few and far between. Michael Mann directed this early in his carrer, that had a lot to do with it being good. Plus we were all younger then with a less developed sense of what was 'good' :) . This doesn't hold up as well as I would have thought considering how much I liked it when it was on originally, but still not bad.
And 'Sympathy for the Devil'? Naw, just a much cheaper similar but not actual version to avoid paying for the rights on the original.

Mann is God.

@vfigueroa1 i agree- why don't they make decent made for tv movies anymore? the afterschool tv specials in the 70's and 80's (covering then taboo material like pre-marital sex) were great too
