Fall 2010 - Sensing the City: a mash-up interactivity and architecture course at CCA, we designed and built a "sonic periscope".
We spent the whole semester studying the Mission and 24th st corridor(deemed the "heart of the Mission") gathering data on navigation, culture, and other aspects that made the Mission a rich and diverse cultural hub. Our final project was an installation on 24th & Harrison that projected some of our findings.
Our piece was dedicated to sounds on that street corner. Using arduino, photo sensors, and wireless speakers, the device would play ambient sound from specified locations when you rotated the column. The form of the piece allowed participants to fully engage with the sound from that location.
