  • I've run both as a DM and as a player. Yes 4e is more streamlined to get new, players in, but that's all it has going for it. Your character lacks the same depth that they can get in 3.5 or Pathfinder. Everyone seems cookie cutter and built for soloing. You don't have that party cohseion or build you have in 3.5. You could have a party of 5 fighters and you do just as well if not better than a 'balanced' party. People say 3.5 was broken, but only if the DM didn't know what he was doing.

  • @TergarNoSuna Eh.. I play in a pathfinder game and I'm not seeing lack of depth as a valid criticism. In pathfinder and 3.5 monsters, NPCs, PCs, all draw from the same spell lists, same feat lists, the whole process of creating encounters and monsters is more drawn out and you spend at least half a session looking up rules to see how they work. In 4e, everything has been designed from the ground up with that latter problem in mind so it's smoother and easier to implement.

  • I think that this edition is so much better because youi don't spend a half hour looking up every freakign rule and it's easy to get new people into.

  • Who else is tired of the "4e = WoW pen/paper" meme? I sure am.

  • @FirestreakRodimusPr Not at all. My group has come to love the 4e system. I completely agree with you on the false rap it has gotten.

  • @inlife9 my apologies I thought you were ripping the system. I think 4E gets a bad rap from people who don't like that the rules for roleplaying aren't spelled out like they are in previous editions.

  • @FirestreakRodimusPr I am perplexed by you claiming my comment is incorrect. My group actually does roleplay in 4e. I was only pointing out a fact, not saying that the rules make us roleplay. We do it cause we like it and 4e does not hurt the ability to do so, as many like to claim. In fact, we now play 4e all the time because we like it, and it does not lack in any elements of fun. Its a good playable system.

  • @inlife9 That's incorrect as multiple videos on Youtube have proven. The amount of roleplay in any edition is directly dependent on who's actually playing. The Penny Arcade podcasts and video casts have seen decreasing amounts of combat and increasing amounts of roleplay as they've grown accustomed to their characters.

  • @WhyMeMoFo The games played most in shops or clubs are encounters.I think these have done a fare share of damage to the vision of 4e. They are meant to bring new people in & to be flashy w/ minis & fighting ex. Most people see just that,& it has created a single mindset. Find a good DM that can blind out the marketing side, & you will enjoy it. My group does not use miniatures all the time.4e is no more, or no less a tactical mini game than AD&D, 3.5 or Pathfinder. You can roleplay.

  • 20yrs of gaming & I enjoy 4e very much. I dont hate Pathfinder, but I feel I get more excitment w/ 4e. I never feel like I am playing WOW when I play. The fluff is Great! My group roleplays heavy in our sessions. You do not have to use miniatures, & it's as easy as Pathfinder w/out them. I notice many players forget they have a basic attack- you dont have to rigidly use your powers (bad name for them) to attack or do stuff. I have seen where DMs are backwards on their thinking in this area.

  • @Ogma01 i hope you have house rules regarding hp gain for the tanks though - it is too little in 4e.
