An evening with prolific bass player and vocalist Francis Mbappe is a joyous celebration of life. He performed with his band The Tribe on April 28, 2009, infusing Joes Pub in New York with the lyrical sounds of his Native Cameroon, inflected with jazz. They played tracks from his albums FM Tribe Volume 1″ (1998), Celebration (2005) and his new release FM Tribe Volume 2, all of which are under his FM Groove, Inc. Label. Mbappe's musical energy is bright and soothing, he is a generous artist on stage, letting each of his bandmembers shine with their own solos.
By the age of nineteen Mbappe was the bass player and musical director for Manu Dibangos band, with whom he toured extensively from 1982 until 1990, and has performed with Herbie Hancock, Fela Kuti, Salif Keita, Paul Simon, and many others. His website is www.fmgroove.com.
I knew Francis when I worked as a receptionist at Kampo Studios in New York back in 2005. Gifted, enterprising, and a very kind-hearted man. I hope to meet with you again, Francis.
