Generally, the three most common roots of "cake" words in Europe and around the world are the Old Norse "cake", the Frankish-filtered proto-Germanic "gateau", and the latin "torta". Since the confection is so specific to Europe, most languages around the world use these words, either naturally or from culturo-linguistic exchange: Japanese: keki (adaptation of "cake").

So, TLDR:

There's a pretty big chance that "torta" means "cake" in your language ^^ #themoreyouknow :P

Before we all flip out about how many languages torta means cake in: in Latin, torta means "round loaf of bread", and most languages have taken the word into their own vocabulary and giving it a meaning derived from that, such as "tart" (flat, open-topped pastry) in English. If you open google translate "cake" Eng->other language, try seeing how many come out as a derivation of "torta" - and keep in mind many others also have a derivation of the Latin word, it just doesn't mean the same thing.
