    The stereotype of the bike messenger who does risky rides between cars, skidding etc. I was a bike messenger without all that show off crap and was still pretty fast.

    Messengers ride fixed gear because it's the bike with the fewest things than can go wrong with it. It's not about being trendy, it's about being practical.

    This was before there was a style to be a bike messenger, and before it didn't matter if you rode a fixed gear bike or not. Now most( most,not all) bike messengers are hipster douche's.
