By failure in Afghanistan we risk the islamists creating the narrative that the muslims defeated the infidel invaders due to the divine support of allah. If we win then the narrative will be that countries which were attacked by terrorists responded by taking on the extremists and defeating them. Winning a historical narrative may seem unimportant but in the battle of perception it's much more crucially important to defeating islamist ideology than people realize.

Another consequence of retreat in Afghanistan is emboldening the "radical" islamists. Obama err I mean Osama himself said that people naturally get behind and support the stronger horse and what clearer message would it send to the "muslim world" that Osama and his ilk are the stronger horse than a victory over America and Britain (the two strongest countries in human history), over NATO (the most powerful military alliance in the world) and over a huge coalition of nations.
