  • 5. cont...Each picker up usually covers 2 or 3 guns and the shoot captain will make sure the birds are picked up in the proximity of the guns.... with the help of the peg dogs that accompany the shooters...as you would expect, most like to give their dogs a bit of fun too.

    THE END (thankfully)

  • 4. cont Out of season, gundog triallers like myself can pay up to £60 for the privilege of maybe 6 or 7 retrieved rabbits or hares on a simulated training day.

The shooting day usually consists of 5 or 6 drives depending on the bag required.... on a really busy drive the guns may shoot up to 100 birds and I have personally picked up 35 birds from one gun alone...quite a lot of game to pack into a Gamebag!... (and very heavy)..cont

  • 3. and this is usually done as the guns are still shooting. The guns themselves like to pick up their own kills that are near their own stand. (peg) The total bag for the day ranges, on my estate, from around 150 to 300 head of game. The pickers up are paid the princely sum of £30 for their endeavours. My dogs are Field Trial dogs and these picking up days enable me to put my dogs through the different scenarios that I would encounter in a Trial..... cont.

  • 2. birds and mark them for retrieving either at the end of the drive or actually during the drive whilst other birds are being shot over the guns and landing within their vicinity. The dogs have to be steady throughout (as witnessed and commented on by yourself) and not run-in to game at any time, not give tongue (squeak or whine) and otherwise be on their best behaviour .... Every command and task is authorised by me, the boss! Wounded birds are usually hunted first provided we can spot them

  • 1.Thanks everybody out there for all the compliments....sorry I havn't the time to respond to each email personally but for the benefit of those that don't know what's involved on a shoot day & picking up with Labradors......What you are seeing in the videos are my team of 'picking up'dogs. In Scotland the beaters push the birds (partridges and pheasants) towards the team of guns, usually 8 guns, and it is the pickers-up who have to spot the wounded (pricked) birds ...cont
