These words grabbed my heart as I read a letter from my friend Shelley White asking friends for donations to help her adopted son Reed that was just diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD):
... as parents of a son with DMD, it is not acceptable for us to do nothing. We are loving parents who can't imagine our lives without our son. We will do everything we can to make sure we never have to experience life without our pride and joy...wouldn't you do the same?"
I cried for days thinking ...what can we do? ...I wanted to make a difference in Reed's life...I wanted to help. I yearned for Shelley, my friend, the Mother --
Then, I asked Shelley "What about our families annual Easter Egg Hunt?...What if we turn it into a fund raiser for Reed?" Immediately she said YES! And, the "Hunt for Reed" was born! ALL money raised goes to Research!!
We had invited friends and neighbors for the past 6 years to a giant Easter Egg Hunt at our home. This year we had over 600 people, 13,000 stuffed eggs and raised over $10,000!
Here's 4 simple ways we raised money:
1. All kids at school are given a "golden egg" invitation in their back packs to bring to the event filled with coins for Reed!
2. We had a Dad's Race! It is hilarious! The Dad's pay $20 to tackle and grab eggs while their kids cheer them on! These eggs have coupons from area Retailers. There is also a prized $100 egg!
3. For $3 per raffle ticket, there is a Girl's and Boy's Basket's filled with electronic toys, candy etc.
4. Ask people to donate directly at parentprojectmd.org.
It is amazing and rewarding to educate and spread awareness about the disease.
