Really bad video of a Solar Gas Turbine genset. It's a 250KW unit built by IH/Solar for Western Electric for the Bell system. Firing up and running on a homebrew JP-4ish mix of diesel, kerosene, and gasoline (it was really cold when this was taken)... I set the VDT TDDO timer to around 10 seconds, versus the factory 2 minutes, just for testing purposes...

  • You wouldn't happen to have the Western Electric KS number for that unit?

  • @SCR2IGBT Yep- the plate is as follows:

    KS 20542 LIST 1

    ASSY NUMBER 907615092

    MODEL NUMBER KS-350

  • Could you tell me were you got this unit, and if they have any more?

  • @Grishe69 Ebay - I've seen a few units on there in the past, but it has been a while. Some more modern than others. Do a search on Ebay for "solar turbine -wind" and that usually will catch 'em.

  • Hello, what is the speed of the turbine at 100% speed?

you know the speed of the generator at 100%? 1900 or 3600 or other?

    Thanks

  • @alejogoldsmith - The generator speed is 3600 RPM, and the turbine at 100% is rated at 37,059 RPM. The accessories (fuel pump , etc.) and generator head are driven via a gear reduction device that also uses the same lubricant the turbine does.

About increase the time of starup I try to made it increasing the inyection fuel and increase the signal speed in order the ECU of fuel contral think the turbine are more fast and send more Diesel, but it only cause over temperature.

Congratulation for mach the way to decrase the time of start up

    Regards

  • would you say a regular gas engine would consume less fuel than a gas turbine engine?

which one would be better in your opinion?

  • If you can afford the fuel - the unit should be no sweat ;) They do draw a lot of fuel.

This unit was around 8000 USD if I recall correctly (about two years ago)...

The unit I had was in pristine shape - the combustor was totally undamaged, and the oil had been changed (on the gearbox regularly), as well as all PM performed.

There are a LOT of electrics on the thing as far as control systems - that can get intimidating...
