Appalachian Christmas Carol performed by Grandma.

This one has a lot of hiss. Jordanthecat cleaned up a copy for me and I posted it as a reply to this one. Thanks Jordanthecat! What a swell guy!

"Sources differ as to the early history of the carol, although its collection is attributed to folk singer, John Jacob Niles. He claimed to have composed the piece in 1933, influenced by three lines of a folk song sung to him by a girl while working as a surveyor in Appalachia." - Wikimedia

Thank you, Sean of Street Corner Records, for transferring my old cassettes into CDs.

  • Beautiful, so soulful! Happy Christmas to you and your family.

  • @oneblueflashinglight Thank you. I hope that you had a happy Christmas and will have a joyful new year.

  • Absolutely beautiful. Thank you for this version, best I've heard. Where did your Grandma live? Do you know where she made this recording? Also what's her name? So many questions.

  • @MrBrooklynScott Thank you. Florence Lowe lived in Central California for much of her life. I think this was recorded on a farm near Fresno.

  • I'm a huge fan of John Jacob Niles and I listen to this song on his 78s. I was searching for his version and found your grandmas...I'm so pleasantly surprised! What a beautiful voice and tasteful interpretation. Thanks for sharing.

  • @vladkilmer Thank you for your comment

  • thank you

  • @puckf17 Thanks. I feel fortunate to have had her in my life.

  • I often find the path less taken most rewarding. Your Grandma did justice to the song; lovely operatic voice but not self important. Including all the famous singers renditions of it, this is the version that speaks to me the most. Thank you and thank your Grandma. You must be very proud of her.

  • This carol is an old English Carol called the Coventry Carol.
