Kyokushin fighter Ryu Narujima shows the "brazilian kick" variation of a roundkick.
Made famous by Francisco Filho and Glaube Feitosa in k-1, this kick variation is something of a trademark knockdown karate kick.

The trick lies in the turning of the pelvis. The foot changes arc and speed, and goes in over the opponents guard.

  • why is it called brazillian kick

  • Because it was a obscure and uncommon kick version until a succession of successful Brazilian knockdown karate fighters/kickboxers specialized in it and made it a mainstream kick seen everywhere.

They didn't invent it, they only popularized it.

It has several names, but the nickname Brazilian kick is recognized in most places. Its even commonly used in japan instead of any of its different formal names.

  • If you had bothered getting the info, you would have know that it is called the brazilian kick because it was POPULARIZED by brazilian kyokushin/knockdown karate fighters in the 80ies. It was not invented by the brazilians.

Yes the japanese had the kick long before the brazilians, but before it was made popular by fighters like Ademir DaCosta, Francisco Filho and lately Glaube Feitosa, it was just a obscure version or the roundkick. Now it is very popular in knockdown karate and kickboxing .

  • What is the karate name of the brazillian kick? ...... (something) ... mawashi geri?

  • It is usually called "Tate kubi mawashi geri" in kyokushin and is related styles. sometimes it is simplified to "tate kubi geri" or something similar ("tate geri", "kubi mawashi geri" or a few other short versions).

Norichika Tsukamoto (1996 world champion in the Shin-kyokushin faction of kyokushin) calls it "Maha geri", and the name has spread somewhat due to his influence.

I have seen a few other names for it. but these are the commonly used ones.

  • I bet the humans were using this kick to take down dinosaurs.

  • He (kolsyrade)made it very clear that it was a karate kick that happened to be put to good use by some Brazilians. By the way, Brazil happens to produce excellent martial artists.
