I watched Küssner's viola students perform last year. His little boy played, too. Everybody was amazing. Shame I don't live in Germany to see more of them :)
Interesting interview thank you..I always found his violin concerto to be pleasant and lyrical even one of my favourites but nevertheless rather straight without the usual bravura and invention for the solo instrument that you would expect from a violin concerto
I think that kavakos is the best violinist alive but david oistrak will be always the king of all violinists

Walter Küssner looked like Mahler when he was younger. = )
