Shell,Marathon and Stat Oil have secured terms for exploiting the huge natural gas fields off the western coast of Ireland. The terms are so unfavorable to the Irish people as to convince many people that corruption on a huge scale was involved. There will be NO direct finantial benifit to the state. In addition a cost saving measure by the companies is to bring high pressure gas pipes through the local community on the way to a refinary 5 kilometers from the coast, close to the source of the community's drinking water. The whole dubious project is being resisted by the community and the better people in the nation.

This is a massive issue. Safety is just the bit mobilising the local community but this is a hugely valuable asset simply given away to Shell. There's no guarantees we'll ever see a cent of tax and virtually no local jobs will be created from what is a massive resource.

shell are "exploiting"the gas fields to provide 60% of irelands energy needs for the next 50 years. ireland does not have an energy company capable of doing this. so shell won the contract. the protesters have ensured that every possible health or environmental concern has been addressed. maybe the deal was shady in its day but so what. its going ahead. the overwhelming majority of mayo and irish people embrace progress.
