A ground level view of the Winans Camel. While most Camels wound up on the B&O, other railroads did use them. This one is marked for the D, L & W, and is named "Carbon". It is based on an actual Camel. These engines were called Camels because the cab sat on top on the boiler (as opposed to Camelbacks, whose cabs straddle the boiler). These were designed to haul heavy loads over the mountains. They were designed by Ross Winans.
