From the Bel Canto Opera productions, Gretel awakens after sleeping a night, lost in the Black Forest.
GRETEL: Where am I? Dreaming? It's nearly light?
I've slept here in the woods all night
High in the branches there's twittering and tweeting
Larks are singing their morning greeting
From early dawn they awake in song
Their neighbours, from nest to nest, all sing along
In perfect harmony, trilling merrily
bless the morning.
(to Hansel) Wake up! You lazy pig, it's daylight
High time you got up
Tirelerili, it's getting late
Tirelerili, it must be eight
The lark is up and gone now
The sun is moving on now
Tirelireli, Tirelireli, Tirelireli,Tirelireli
HANSEL: Cock-a-doodle-do, it's not true!
Cock-a-doodle-do, I'm up too!
So, don't call me lazy!
I'm fresh as any daisy!
Cock-a-doodle-do!
GRETEL: Tirelireli
HANSEL: I'm wide awake, I feel so good
I thrive on sleeping here in the wood
GRETEL: Yes, so do I.
Strange as it seems
I was in Heaven in my dreams
HANSEL: Tell me what vision you saw.
GRETEL:) My vision...
From all around in the forest
I heard mysterious music that sounded like a chorus
Out of blackness, a mystical light
Radiant, it was glowing
Then it brightly lit up the night
Beaming, like a halo, rays of light were streaming
Golden glory from Heaven gleaming
Through the mist I saw a clearing there
angels were standing
Thronged on a heavenly staircase landing
Angelic faces shining bright
from the flickering candle light...
HANSEL: Fourteen angels, and down they came
GRETEL: Are you saying that you saw the same?
HANSEL: Gretel, could we be dead? I saw them...
just as you said.
GRETEL: Look there! Be still!
HANSEL: What's happened? This morning this was a hill!
It's spooky! If we're not dead, then we're ill!
GRETEL: Just smell! It's delicious!
Pray tell, am I still awake?
BOTH: The walls of that cottage are gingerbread cake
It's covered with sweeties and goodies you bake
The window is sugar, and just to the right
marshmallow and toffee and Turkish delight
Behind, round the edge
There's a gingerbread hedge
To live inside would be like a dream come true
It's occupied by somebody... I'm wondering who
Who e'er lives in there must be friendly, kind and sweet
She might care to share it, and find us a treat
If she knew we were ravenous she'd spare a morsel to eat
I'm sure she could
I'm sure she would

  • My old singing teacher is Catherine Benson, loved her in this role!

  • Totally agree with you. I'm only learning this now, and I'm 20. I couldn't have handled the string of high As and the final top D even a year ago. I know every voice is different, but I'm sure that it's not suitable for young voices.

  • Renethel, if you sang the original Humperdinck opera at 15, your teacher should be shot. No self-respecting singing teacher would allow a teenage voice to attempt any major operatic role, let alone one as demanding in range, length and vocal technique as Gretel. As for "the score isn't terribly difficult to sing", any properly trained professional operatic soprano will tell you it's one of the most challenging roles in the repertoire. Humperdinck's opera is not musical comedy, Miss Helfgott.

  • i did Hansel and Gretel and I played Gretel at 15 yrs old. The whole cast was under 18. The score isn't terribly difficult to sing and it's a lot more believable with younger ppl. I'm definitely with you on you comment. :)

  • this is kinda wierd. i don't think adults should do hansel and gretel, especially not opera.

that's just opinion though, she's got a brilliant voice

  • Oh, Ok..I live in California US.

That would be a long drive to

    see your next opera. !

    LOL
