Giant Kick Ass Robot Action. Created by manga master Go Nagai.

Made in Japan in 1980. Shown in the UK on Saturdays in 1983-4. Correct me if I am wrong had the highest ratings for a childrens show of its time which gave cause for concern for Gerry Anderson when he brought out his Terrahawks.

Was also a superbly drawn comic strip in "Look-In" magazine.

If you watch the whole series again you will find it quite slow and there are a few flashback scenes. Also the whole "Skull" business seems a bit odd if you are over eight. Maybe because it was spread out over a year but the final boss showdown scene certainly seemed dramatic back in 1984.

Was more popular in the UK than Japan maybe because we had less exposure to these types of programs. Also there was appeal in the "quest" nature of the series and the darker aspects of the storyline as well as the sinister characters which wasn't typically present in western series.

  • And they're both great.

  • Power Rangers was created by Go Nagai, the same man who created Star Fleet. So thats why the massive fighting robot idea looks the same.

  • Hmm. I can see where Power Rangers nicked the idea of massive robots that fight it out only to use the weapon that instantly destroys the bad guy they should have used in the first place.

A most excellent nostalgic trip back to the eighties! Thank you.

  • They both played guitar.

  • *Actually*...Van Halen did the guitar work, which is what cvjucla3 must be referring to.

Brian May just provided the vocals.

  • That's Brian May you're thinking of ;)

  • Eddie Van Halen is pure electric on this number.

  • Wow. It's been so long since I've seen this. My dad taped a lot of the episodes back in 84 in Germany. Wish I still had the tapes!

  • Very cool. I remember dancing around to this in my bedroom when it came out on vinyl!
