Indians relied on the massive herds of buffalo roaming the Western range for food, clothing, even tools. It was the migrating habits of the buffalo that turned the Plains Indians into nomads. They followed the herds, killing only enough to survive, resting between hunts, raising their families, training their young bucks. Eventually, though, due to a number of unexpected factors, the herds were all but wiped out, spelling doom for the Indian way of life. The Indians continued to kill them, many were wiped out by marauding wolves and bears, then came the white man, butchering them by the hundreds to feed wagon trains, slaughtering them by the thousands for their furs (leaving their meat to rot in the sun), shooting them from moving trains for sport. As the herds weakened, more of them sickened and died in rough winter weathers, nearly driving them to extinction. They are slowing regaining strength in this country, but they will probably never cover the horizon as far as the eye can see as they once did. Not unless man dies out. Music is "Enigma,:" a Sacred Spirit Indian chant, followed by Roger Miller's "You Can't Roller-Skate in a Buffalo Herd," and ending with another Native American Indian chant.

  • I homeschool my kids and we are doing a unit on Native Americans. We are, of course, studying the buffalo and I showed the three of them your video. So much of the artwork reflected what we've already learned about how they hunted, etc. Thank you for a wonderful resources for my kids!!

  • Thank you very much. It's delightful to hear that some of these video creations actually accomplish something other than just entertainment.
