Paws and Stripes co-founder and Iraq war veteran Jim Stanek talks about the use of service dogs in helping veterans with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI).
Paws and Stripes™ is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization for wounded veterans of our United States military that works to provide service dogs for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and Traumatic Brain Injury. The service dogs are obtained only from shelters, and are trained by professionals specializing in service dogs. It is the aim of this organization to provide these dogs and training for no cost to the veteran. Training for a dog and it's partner costs $2,000.

I deal with PTSD and bi-polar every day, sometimes from minute to minute. I thought I was nuts or mistaken when I noticed I didn't need as much medication and felt better snuggling with my dogs. I was more relaxed and didn't have the night terrors as often, I didn't "wake up" huddled in my closet any more, and my room mate didn't have to shout my name or duck before coming into my room. Even though I'm not a Vet it's comforting to know I'm not alone.

I live with a disabled veteran - PTSD is part of it - My dogs have always made a differeince and especially his heart dog, Trouble - I too have PTSD - I don't like, but have tried drugs to help - the best help ever has been my dogs! God bless our vets and thank you for rescuing dogs and giving them a good home and purpose!
