It's been sixty years since the world's best known and arguably most destructive firearm, the AK-47, went into production.

47 countries now arm their troops with the gun designed by Mikhail Kalashnikov, which was originally used by the Soviet Army.

But in some countries, the AK-47 has been used to arm child soldiers and the UN says it's had a devastating effect.

Kalashnikov has said that if he had his time again, he might have preferred to have invented something peaceful like the lawnmower.

But this week, he was unrepentant, saying his work defended his fatherland.

He also said: 'I am often asked which model is dearest to me. And I say 'Ask a mother of five children which one is her dearest and she will answer each of them cost me dear.' It's the same for an engineer. Each model took a lot out of me.'
