Dachau, former concentration camp in Munich, Germany

Dachau was a Nazi German concentration camp, and the first one opened in Germany, located on the grounds of an abandoned munitions factory near the medieval town of Dachau, about 16 km northwest of Munich , southern Germany.

Dachau served as a prototype and model for the other Nazi concentration camps that followed.

In total, over 200,000 prisoners from more than 30 countries were housed in Dachau of which nearly one-third were Jews.[3] 25,613 prisoners are believed to have died in the camp and almost another 10,000 in its subcamps,[4] primarily from disease, malnutrition and suicide. In early 1945, there was a typhus epidemic in the camp followed by an evacuation, in which large numbers of the weaker prisoners died.

Together with the much larger Auschwitz, Dachau has come to symbolize the Nazi concentration camps to many people. Konzentrationslager (KZ) Dachau holds a significant place in public memory because it was the second camp to be liberated by British or American forces. Therefore, it was one of the first places where the West was exposed to the reality of Nazi brutality through firsthand journalist accounts and through newsreels.

I would just like to say that i know that the holocaust was horrible and stuff, but when you think of this terrible time, many people only think of jews. well they werent the only ones there! Poles and czeks got killed to to. and hitler didnt even orriginally start with the jews, but mentaly and physicaly challenegeded to. i just wanted to put it out there that the holocasut doesnt only pertain to jews. thank you.

you are right 100%, although mainly gays, gypsies and disabled and political prisoners were killed along with the Jews in the camps. however, Jews were killed disproportionately. read the mein kampf by hitler, where he is talking about the final solution for the Jews. in some european countries as many as 80-90% jews were killed. do you know how many 6,000,000 people are? it's a bit infantile to refer to the holocaust as "horrible and stuff" because a mind cannot comprehend what has happened

nevertheless, you are absolutely right and if you go to any former concentration camp, you will see that the plight of other nations is always emphasized. it's just because the majority were jews, the holocaust is associated with the death of six million Jews.

@RManFlint So you got all your facts from your best friend's mother? How do you know exactly what did and didn't take place there? The Nazis were great at documenting things with precise accuracy. Most information actually comes from the Nazi records!

@GomerPyleFTW Read some more books. Less than ten percent of extermination camp victims were tattooed. Dachau wasn't an extermination camp. Although it had a functional gas chamber it was never used. The tens of thousands of inmates who died at Dachau were either arbitrarily murdered or worked or starved to death. My best friend's mother was a Dachau survivor. You can do better than buying into the neo-Nazi lies. Work on it.

@hamsterfreak98 Get YOUR facts straight! the meaning of the word "concentration camp" mens "camp for political prisoners" so WHY aren't there any inmates with the star of David on the arm? There are NO PHOTOS to porve this statment of yours. If you had done you homework you would see that sevral sources PROVE my point including servral encyclopedias, not just one book written by some jews. Have you even bother to check or criticize the books sources or there author? No you havn't.

Actually that is not true. At this moment I am reading a book called: Until We Meet Again by Michael Korenblit and Kathleen Janger. Mayorek Korenblit, pronounced in America Meyer Korenblit was Jewish. Over the course of the book he was deported to many concentration camps and one of those was Dachau. So, before you call someone a liar, get your facts straight!

What have we done so bad that others haven't done? Do we make camps to put innocent children, and adults in them so they can await their deaths? How in any way are we "evil"?
