Why compare Aer Lingus with Ryanair? They are two completely different products. Aer Lingus is a world class national flag carrier with many years in the business and experience. Ryanair is a low cost carrier serving leisure markets and secondary airports.

@LAOTG Cheers! I was looking at Google maps and it was there but not a bloody clue. I often fly to Dublin but in this direction very rarely. Do you know why this route is taken. It's better and more scenic.

@BRUTUALTRUTH No problem. This route is chosen like all runway choice, because of wind direction, i.e. always land and take off into the wind. Runway 28 is most commonly used because the prevailing wind in Dublin, like most or Ireland is westerley.

@LAOTG Thanks for that.. I always thought planes prefer to fly in the direction of wind to give it extra lift and not fly into the facing wind! I thought that would be more dangerous. I was thinking, the winds must be severe if the planes land here in this direction and more fuel and miles would be entailed. I do like this video and have downloaded it.

@BRUTUALTRUTH Flying into the wind actually gives more lift .e.g facing into a ten knot wind and not moving and the a/c already has 10 knots of lift over its wings so lets say the take off speed for the weight of the a/c is 150 knots well taking off into a head wind of 10 knots means the a/c will lift off at 140 knots ground speed. Opposite would happen if they were using tail winds and they may run out of runway on take off and it would also be more difficult to stop on landing.
