In nature, the foal is not weaned suddenly. Young horses will occasionally take a drink from their dams until they're about 2, or even a bit older. It's not natural to wean them suddenly and if you want to emulate natural herd behavior, you won't wean him "cold turkey" but will instead just taper off naturally.

@chiefpony1 His eyes are clouded, if you look closely. But a lot of blind horses, especially those that are born blind or become blind at an early age, don't act blind.
