The first time I ever paid attention to the great lyrics. I bought the 45 rpm version of it too...amazing version along with Whitney Houston and then Marvin Gaye

One of, if not the best rendition I've ever heard. I was fourteen, and I can still remember seeing/hearing his performance. Stunning then, still is.

Wasn't this controversial back in the day when he sang it @ the All Star game? Personally, I love it & find it a lovely rendition. Ditto R. Kelly's "gospel" version.

Sounds to me like he is literally serenading the flag...

just beautiful. hes an amazing talent.

...and it expresses freedom

won-der-ful ! the tune expresses love and peace and tolerance... and the deep sadness, war causes... no wonder, veterans hate it - it shows them what they don't want to see

The song's original tune was a British drinking song. Jose did an awesome job of this...he paid a price with his career for this but he blazed a trail. He should be proud....it is an awesome interpretation....takes nothing away but only adds to it.

The irony is just so thick. The country, priding itself of freedom of exrpession wanted to condemn a man for freely expressing that country's National ANthem.
I have to say it was a beatiful rendition. It was also very apropos for the time the country was in at that time.
I love it. One thing is truer each and every day. Human beings suck.
I do not think the people were ready for this version. Most of the vets that they said that were watching were WW2 and Korean vets and most likely they were the ones who were pissed off. I think Jose Feliciano did a excellent job and touched on the moment of the times. Instead of singing it poppy and cheerful he sang it the way it should have been more so with our boys in vietnam dying and giving up their lives. I'm glad he cam back and sang it again this year and he still sounded great!!
