This is hypocritical.

ah yes the courts. the system by which single semi-random men alter the law to suit their desires. well, thanks for the explanation.
-
@waldoman7 it is the way the courts have treated the interpretation of the Establishment clause of the First Amendment. If you are going to allow a christian display then you must allow any other belief or dis-belief to have a display as well. This is not a majority rules kind of decision as many people seem to think it should be.
Public facilities should be for all citizens inclusive and not just to serve a segment that has a certain belief.
-
@waldoman7 Is that really a big deal though. We have enough problems to do deal with without making imaginary ones
-
well clearly if we are to take seperation of church and state as a law, then christmas must be removed from it's status as a national holiday. politicians are simply to afraid to do that and enrage the public.
-
please explain how. congress can make no law concerning religion. how does this relate to removing all traces of religion from federal buildings?
-
@waldoman7 The right to bear arms is the Second Amendment. And as for the 10 commandments being in a public funded building you would be incorrect, that is a violation of the First Amendment.
-
actually Southern seccesion was prompted by slave states becoming overpowered in congress by free ones, and even in the south no one really LIKED slavery. slavery was always on its way out
-
er, isn't first amendment the right to bear arms? I could be mistaken.
anyway, the religious amendment says "congress shall make no law concerning religion". No part of that says that all aspects of religion shall be removed from any government location or establishment. If they want the ten commandments in a court house...technically that's not forbidden.

I know that technically you cannot have a religious activities sponsored by government. I get that. But Christmas is a christian holiday. If this is a Christmas event then I see no reason why they cant read it. It is literature. Hes not leading in prayer or any rituals. Hes reading. If you want to take it far enough you can say a city cannot sponsor a religious holiday event. Im an atheist, but that was a bit nit picky
This is the reason why the Founders put religion into the 1st Amendment, to put it beyond the possibility of voting. One person or a thousand, it doesn't matter. You can't vote rights away.

Yes, they do acquiesce to the demands of one person. If they didn't, it would be a tyranny of the majority.
