Oh, Iris and Father Melia's unrequited love! That scene just broke my heart! ... They loved and respected each other with such pure heart! ... it is such a shame, really! ... That the two most selfless characters, and most deserving of each other couldn't have the comfort of having each other! ... This is just simply heartbreaking!!!

I don't think the family's opinion now has to do with the relationship he started. It has to do with the beating he gave May, Iris, and Ruby, after May's confession. And for abandoning the family, when he is most needed. Esp. considering May came to him in the park for her father's forgiveness and love, hoping he would acknowledge his grandson, but he would'nt. He condemned her himself and in the name of her dead mother. This is the chief reason she wanted to kill the baby and possibly herself.
