Receiving a traditional Iban tattoo in Sarawak, from the Iban of Rayang Ulu. The ink comprises of soot collected by suspending ceramic bowls upside down over candles or lamps left burning over night, mixed with honey collected from bee hives.
The tattooing took approximately 9 hours to complete.
Traditional Iban tattooing is a rapidly disappearing art, now only the oldest generations wear 'suits' of traditional tattoos which enable their gods to see them and permit them to pass into the after life, even fewer living Iban know how to perform the ritual.
I apologise that there is so little video footage, I was on my own and a little distracted at the time; and as things progressed I only became more distracted!
