This is a quick video showing you what you will need if you fly a puppy above board on an air plane. This is a different method of transport, because the pup remains with you at all times. When you ship a pup cargo, they will fly underneath the plane in the climate controlled cargo area with the other dogs. You will need to check your airline and ask about their size requirements for a above board carrier. I use the one displayed in the video and I have never had any airline reject the size. When flying above board, you must first book your flight. Then you need to call the airline PET hot line to reserve your dog a "position" on the plane. Some airlines only allow 5 dogs above board on any given flight. You can pay for your flight in advance, but they will not let you pay for the pet's flight until the day you fly it. But you MUST reserve the spot in advance. Once you get to the air port, you check in and pay for your pet's flight at that time. On Southwest it is currently $75.00 for the pet, plus the cost of your flight. But prices always change and each airline is different. I always send a bag of little kibbles to feed your pup through the openings just in case they get a little restless. Once you board the plane, the pup MUST be kept in the carrier at all times. No exceptions. When your dog gets older and if you want to fly with them above board, you can only do it if they are a registered Service Dog. And you will have to book them a seat from what I hear. Some airlines are now catering to those who want to fly with their dogs above board. You can research them online.

  • I'm a little worried about something...I'm getting a golden retriever puppy and I wanted to know if a puppy can stay in the cabin with it's owner or does it absolutely have to go in the cargo all alone and be scared to death? My puppy will be about 4 months old when I'm leaving to come home in the states so do they tolerate this?

  • @UnForgivenMushroom They will only let you fly a pup above board if it is less than 20 lbs and can fit in a small bag. It has to be able to fin under the seat in front of you. Otherwise, it has to fly cargo. Contenential is the best airline for cargo. Call their pet hot line for questions. However, "service dogs" can fly above board. Must have service dog tags.
