Dr. Reuben Brigety, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Population, Refugees, and Migration, August 23, 2011:
Speaking with journalists across the continent about the refugee situation in the Horn of Africa, Dr. Brigety remarked, "We are in the midst of what is likely the largest humanitarian crisis in a generation...There have been at least 235,000 refugees from Somalia that have fled to principally Ethiopia and Kenya, and to a lesser extent Djibouti since January of this year. The government of the United States takes this challenge very seriously. We have contributed over 560 million dollars since the start of the year to begin to address this crisis."
