This song brings a tear to my eyes still. Such an important message it brings, that for it to be described as a lesson, would be grounds to fire those instructors for lack of passing important psychological prerequisites before we let them near our children. What a sin to kill the wonder and joy a child feels for life, still some can't understand what kind of people we are making? We used to be able to play as children, in our communities without a need to be kept indoors. Remember?

Our music teacher played this for us in elementary school 20 years ago and it made me cry. I'll never forget it.
@vasallizinni - you were doing alright until you referrenced "towards their political ends" - this story is not about politics. If you want it to be, take it somewhere else. Harry Chapin was not making a political statement about either the public school system in general or the Los Angeles school district (as you had referred to them in the comments I deleted). Politics did not cause - nor will it remedy - what Harry Chapin was lamenting here. This is about innocence lost. Leave it at that.
