Farmers in the Midwest who sold corn to VeraSun Energy Corp. have been receiving official letters asking for most of the money back.
Trade association groups say that growers have a defense and should consult an attorney before sending money.
One farmer, Shannon Hannappel, who farms 1,400 acres in Nebraska, said that she thought she was done dealing with the company until she received a letter requesting a repayment of $80,000.
The letters were sent to farmers paid by VeraSun in the 90 days before the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The settlement offer requests an 80% repayment of what the company paid for their corn.
