This is our idea for the Create2010 competition. Basically, it is a clockwork device that activates a spring mechanism in order to turn off the switch by 'swacking' it, just like a rat-trap catching a rat, hence the nickname 'rat-trap'. It is box-like, where the clockwork is stored inside the box, and the wormgear is outside.
Figure 1.1
- Diagram of product.
- idea is a mechanism which turns off socket switch after 2 hours
- according to some studies, overcharging electrical devices like handphones and music players might shorten the lifespan of the batteries. Such devices are supposed to be charged for two hours only, but people tend to charge them overnight.
- This wastes a lot of enerygy and contributes to global warming and diminishing supplies of non-renewable fossil fuels.
- The Swacker runs on clockwork and is thus energy efficient
- The Swacker is attached to the socket by suction cups.
Figure 1.2
- Basically, our product comprises a clockwork mechanism connected to a worm gear. After the mechanism is wound up, it would turn, turning the worm gear along with it.
- The worm gear is positioned so that it stops the spring mechanism (which resembles a rat trap) from snapping down. Thus once the worm gear moves a far enough distance upwards, the spring mechanism will snap onto the socket switch and turn it off.
- Additionally, the metal which hits the socket switch would be padded to reduce damage to the switch.

- Energy is transferred to mainspring
- Power provided by mainspring
- The worm gear is turned by the wheel train
