I have a better way to do this....instead of setting opacity to zero, how about you just set the object as a Dummy???

ACK.... users, note that the alignment tool will NOT work if the Transform Gizmo is turned on. If you don't know this, it can be frustrating. Toggle the Transform Gizmo with ctrl-q.
