I read that he was poisoned by a jealous bar owner. He was playing at the man's bar, and the bar owner offered a bottle of booze to Johnson that he had poisoned. Johnson had been paying attention to the man's wife in way that made him want to kill Johnson. He died a few days after drinking the tainted hooch. Many bluesmen met bad ends. It was not a good life. Lots of violence.
