I am an ELCA Lutheran from South Carolina. I play the piano and organ. Today (February 12), I played this for Sunday School assembly. Sadly, it is not in our Hymn Book (Evangelical Lutheran Worship). It was in our other two (Lutheran Book of Worship and Service Book and Hymnal).

Try searching in youtube for:
Katherine Jenkins Dear Lord And Father Of Mankind
to hear the REPTON version.

I liked your informal modest and careful interpretation.
First time I'd heard this hymn to that tune. In England we are very used to the tune, REPTON. by Hubert Parry. George Stocks, director of music at Repton School, set it to 'Dear Lord and Father of mankind' for use in the school chapel. By this time, Rest, by Frederick Maker was already well established with the lyrics in the US.
The words are by an American Quaker, J G Whittier, from a much longer poem "The Brewing of the Soma".

Matthew, I just can't find the words to say thank you. But I'm sure that you know what I mean. Thanks for your friendship and for this little treasure. Un abbraccio, Marco.
Yours is the only version of this hymn with the melody by Maker. I've played it on the guitar for more than 40 years and was disappointed in my search until I came across your vid. I play it in C with excursions way up the neck. If I ever get a cam-corder I'll upload mine.

@tqnews2 Out of curiosity, what is the other melody this is done by? Maker's is the only one I've known.
