At the San Diego Zoo I heard that bamboo exports hurt wild pandas because chinese exporters compete with the animals for the reeds. It may be fast growing but that doesnt do much for a tired, hungry panda looking for some yummy bamboo.

Bamboo seems like a super eco-friendly alternative to cotton fiber at first blush, but I have heard that the process of turning bamboo into wearable fabric involves the use of a lot of harsh chemicals and is also energy intensive. Does anyone know the details of this process?
