Eunice Hii, a recent graduate of the UBC Sauder School of Business, talks about the challenges of "following your passion," especially as an individual who is, herself, part of the "Generation Y," and viscerally aware of the many opinions that inform that term. Here, she suggests that one can still follow their passions, but with a number of important parameters in mind.

November 3rd, 2012. University of British Columbia, Vancouver, BC, Canada
Filmed by Craig Ross: Video edited by David Ng

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

I had to force myself to keep watching until the end. So little content in so many words.

When you say its the worse generation because you have an entire generation (assumed) that demands work/life balance, that means simply that the owners of things, the ones with wealth have a work pull of both skilled and essential people who might need to be negotiated with. The old school approach is the talent of people were always at the mercy of ownership. We are talking the average person, we're talking those wall street types where we had to give them bonuses or they'd seek to go elsewhere

If your going to talk about the best or worse generation you must go beyond the 20th-21st century. Go back into history. THEN do a comparison. So when Gen Y is said as 'the worse' it is only relative to the last few generations of mostly living memory. Plus, you can do this type of research in the future since there will be, I assume a generation Z, or what, a Gen XX? the idea of calling generations by X, Y, Z was not well thought out.

Eunice, you are charmingness incarnate. But, dude, the flimsy coherence of your ideas blemishes what was a promising beginning. Was your audience GenYers?? Were there some secret code words that ignited GenY into clarity and focus? I didn't see it. But I believe you Eunice. And thus I shall help. Please read Howe & Strauss' Generations book. Also perhaps, passion isn't meant to be FOLLOWED. But rather CREATED so that it's in resonance with our core skills. And thus, passion follows US.

This talk is so beautiful, simple, doable, life changing. A message by someone that has put a lot of thought into life & its meaning & how we can make a positive difference. Well done Eunice....Re previous comments, I've cleaned toilets for a living & I've done it with passion. ... One can continually point to history & its past problems & hatred, but if all you do is blame, then you wont learn from it or grow. You could use history to better the world as you know it, if you had the courage.

You know, there's an inscription in pompeii describing the young generation as shiftless and decadent... But just so we're clear, I'm smack in the middle of that generation, and I've never even visited the place you're talking about. I do work for a living, We're as screwed as you are. As likely to be fired, or have our salaries cut and duties increased. Or not be able to find work at all.
