Since a lot of people have made comments on how it was made, I've uploaded a breakdown of the shot as a video response.

Misdirection is a practical tool of practical effects. With digital effects I dont think visual effects require misdirection anymore. (Unless the graphics suck, Which they frequently do.) Yours are good.

As fas as visual effects have come, they are still far from perfect to the human eye, and misdirection can still be a very useful tool.
See the car chase from Bad Boys 2: The more obvious action of the wrecked cars being thrown at the main characters was actually done practically with real cars, while the hero car is CG. This reversal keeps the eye focused away from the effects. (Fooled me and quite a few other artists I know.)

Thats cool. Its not composited though. Its a mechanical effect and an actor has his hand poking through a hole and attached to a prosthetic wrist. Look real closely.

I wish I had a practical setup as cool as you are describing. Afraid it's only a composite though. ;)

I stand corrected. Thats usually how similar effects are done. See Bride of Re-Animator or Empire Strikes back. If I were going to do it through compositing, I would have had the arm on a raised platform with space
underneath, so the audiance could see that it is not a hand sticking through a hole. But, Its cool no matter how you did it.

Ah, but by not doing it that way I was able to fool you into thinking it was a practical effect. Misdirection is one of the many tools of Visual Effects. :)
