On November 28, 1920, Barry's unit ambushed and killed almost a whole platoon of British Auxiliaries at Kilmichael, County Cork

On Saturday March 19 1921 104 volunteers of the West Cork Brigade of the Irish Republican Army under the command of General Tom Barry attacked and defeated 1,200 British soldiers, members of the Essex and Hampshire Regiments and the Black and Tans.

This song tells of their battles with the British and the video contains images from the film 'The Wind that Shakes the Barley' based on a cork IRA Flying Column.

LYRICS

We'll raise our voices in Ireland's praise
Glad are our hearts today
For Ireland's son's have proved their worth
in the good old IRA
All parts fought well for Roisin Dubh, but we a record made
In good old Cork, in famed west Cork, The 3rd West Cork Brigade

The Black and Tans to Ireland came to send us to their doom
Their dirtiest warriors sallied forth in lorries from Macroom
But at Kilmichael's bloody fight, their conquering course was stayed
In good old Cork, in famed west Cork, the 3rd West Cork Brigade

Then at Crosbarry's battlefield our gallant boys saw red
For 10 to 1 the saxon host before our onslaught fled
And o'er the hills we made our way while our gallant piper played
In good old Cork, in famed west Cork, the 3rd West Cork Brigade

Our boys fought well in every fight, we need not call a name
But Commandant Hales and Barry are now well known to fame
Napoleon like they led us on with courage we obeyed
In good old Cork, in famed west Cork, the 3rd West Cork Brigade

But in our triumph's we shant forget, our comrades brave who fell
Some sleep today in nameless graves, but soon their deeds will tell
In grateful Ireland, brave and free we'll have their names displayed
In good old Cork, in famed west Cork, the 3rd West Cork Brigade

  • @Flamorgan not famous for turning the other cheek as a famous irishman once said

  • A small group of untrained locals, led by Tom Barry, defeated the ruthless and feared "Auxilliaries". This group were not the 'black an tans', they were a selected group of officers who had all served at least, one tour of service.

Many differing tales of events from the battle remain, but one thing is certain. The "bloody fight" as Mr. Barry described it- sent shockwaves through the Armed forces of Britain, and it was then realised that a military campaign alone, would not quench this group

  • @TomBarry192I

What a great movie. Totally underrated. Cillian Murphy's best performance in my opinion.

  • Im proud to be from west cork..... I work in the pub next to Michael Collins homeplace.... and i went to school in the same school as Tom Barry :) Irish and Proud :)

  • @jimirish10 well said united irishmen emett wolfetone.32 counties green white and orange.tom barry wot a man

  • So, do the people of modern Ireland believe that their sons sold them out for political seats in Ireland/Brittish parlament? Northern Ireland is still under Brittish control/rule; what have they exactly accomplished for the people of Ireland? They are probably rich men, but will they go down in history with the others who sacrificed their lives for a united Ireland? Just an interested American in Irish/Brttish politics.

  • @PURPLEBEATTIE1 people and nations can dream such things when they are on their death bed. How long before default?

  • @sandyrow100 (1) It's Connolly, not Connelly. (2) Tom Barry makes clear in his autobiography that he had zero national consciousness when he volunteered, as a very young man, to join the British army. It was learning of the sacrifice of Connolly, and the other 1916 patriots, that first stirred this consciousness in him, and shaped the rest of his life.
