After a year or two in a healthy environment most house plants will need to be repotted. This video discusses how to choose a new pot, how to configure drainage and how to setup the roots and soil for repotting a plant. Nice filming!
BTW if you're worried about soil coming out of the drainage hole while re-potting, then put a small piece of paper over the hole before a handful of rocks or gravel. In time, the plant's roots will bind the soil so that it doesn't fall out, and by that time the paper will have disintegrated.
