All that being said, to suggest that Spanish is the language of the ghettos is not cool. I have been to nations where Spanish is the primary language. Many cities that I visited did not look like a ghetto to me. There is a village in Mexico, I believe that it is called Tocumbo (please correct me if I am wrong on that name), that is completely made of marble: The houses, streets, sidewalks, buildings all made of marble. It was quite lovely. Barcelona is a fine city with great architecture.

This is the Spanish one learns from textbooks -- which is fine. However, the Spanish he spoke does indeed sound...textbook-y.

This reminds me of the time I was in Europe and people were conversing in English with me. The way they said the words was...proper. You know? In other words, they spoke English to me in a way that was ummmm...without any slang or nuance. That was strange to my ears, even though I completely understood what they were saying.
