When looking in the music encyclopedia for a describtion of the word PERFECTION I found : RITA STREICH !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Of all the versions I heard there is no doubt she inherits the standard of this song as well as the other Nightingale/Nachtigall. I wonder if she was even able herself to make a better one than this recording!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Lovely tone and exquisite singing. Other fine versions include those of Mabel Garrison, Evelyn Scotney, and...Lily Pons. Thanks for sending and thanks to inca48 for posting.
That's intriguing, I thought it was derived from the Oscar Wilde fairy tale about a nightingale piercing its heart on a rose thorn to appease a love lorn student by turning a white rose red.
I once heard her sing this in a concert and I was dumbfounded. She was as perfect in person as she is on this recording. A truly remarkable voacalise by one of the greatest singers of all time.
Absolutely the best. Breath taking.

I'm not surprised, Rita Streich is indeed, absolute coloratura soprano perfection.
