Biker not looking behind him

Can this rider avoid being rear ended? This is probably a habit pattern he uses at all lights

The video was originally made regarding a thread in a forum where people don't look behind them when they stop to see if the vehicle behind them is stopping. I find the reactions to it rather humorous.

I'm a rider. While it is good practice to keep your eyes in your mirrors (at least until a few cars are stacked up and stopped behind you), there is no way to guarantee you won't be rear-ended. This is one of the most vulnerable places for a motorcyclist to be and why I am a proponent of allowing filtering or lane sharing.

It's not legal to filter here. If you just stay back a car length or so with a clear shot to an escape route and look behind until a car or two stops, you can avoid most of the problems.

Stupid video... But to answer your question....Lane splitting is illegal here but I ALWAYS pull beside the car in front of me (to be next to their gas tank) so I don't get pinched should a car rearend me. I don't do it to pass them, simply to prevent myself from becoming a pancake.

All the comments about thinking safety when on two... And how the rider should be more aware. Really, if the rider gave a rat's rear about that he'd have been wearing leathers and a helmet. 200 mph bike, 30 mph brain. That is what I see here.

its impossible to avoid a rear ending unless you know the person behind you is completely aware, by the time you realize their not going to stop its too late for you to turn out of the way.
