al was a great man of his time. in reply to some of the comments here. Jolson was a Jew which was hated by all black equal rights groups in amercia. the minstrels linked to crows law in the 1800's long before Jolson. he wore black face in respect of were his songs came from. get facts right before playing the race card

I'd research a little bit harder if I were you. The black face painting originated in America when white performers wished to celebrate the unique aspects of black performance and integrate them into their own minstrel shows as the performers started moving south. Yes, in also became a method of ridiculing black people, but it's origin is not malicious. There is no attempt here to 'understand' being black. You can interpret it as you wish, but there is no ill will in this particular performance.

Al Jolson was not making fun of African Americans. He was protesting the rules on Broadway that Blacks were not allowed to perform. He painted his face black, sings songs that supposed Black man would sing. If he could he would have painted a Black man White and let him sing a song that supposed a White man would sing.

So according to you black face began "only" because of a wish to 'celebrate' unique aspects of black performance and in smaller part to ridicule? Hmm so it wasn't because of segregation and the fact that black performers were sumtimes *forbidden* to do that in front of white audiences?? But that;s ok even if they portrayals are a sterotype because they just wanted to celebrate 'black culture'. um ya so that's why i reserve my valley girl accent for ppl like you :)

Judging from your display picture you're a half breed (half white, half black). You don't seem to be commenting on all the videos of black people beating up white people just for walking into a black neighborhood, yet you take offense to a talented singer painting his face black. Why don't you just listen and STFU.
