Lucent Technologies claims to have developed a way to potentially deliver data at 10 terabits or trillion bits per second effectively upping the internet speed limit 1-thousand percent.

ON Tuesday, Lucent the largest telecom equipment maker and No. 2 net hardware supplier after Cisco Systems unveiled the new router technology called the WaveStar LambdaRouter.

The new router uses a series of microscopic mirrors to instantly direct and redirect optic signals between fibers.

Current technology converts the optical signals to electrical signals then back to optical for the re-route.

Lucents says its WaveStar LambdaRouter eliminates the electric conversion bottleneck.

One net operator PSINet said ti will be the first corporate customer to install WaveStar routers in its core fiber optic system.

PSINet says with the new equipment, it will start processing data at 10 gigabit or billion bits per second a 400% increase over the industry standard 2.5 gps.
