The stethoscope was invented in 1816 by the French physician René T.H. Laënnec (1781-1826). In this clip, several examples of 19th century monaural stethoscopes are shown by Christopher M. Hoolihan, Rare Books & Manuscripts Librarian, Edward G. Miner Library.
