Sighing Softly To The River

Gilbert and Sullivan's raucous operatic tale is captured in all its fun and glory in this production, recorded live at Central Park's Delacorte Theater. Kevin Kline sparkles as the swashbuckling and libidinous Pirate King while Linda Ronstadt makes her theatrical debut as the lovely and virginal Mabel. When Mabel and Frederic, a young pirate bound to serve the Pirate King, fall in love, complications arise and high spirited antics ensue. The incomparable cast offers the best in this boisterous romp.

Despite some of the technical shortcomings of the DVD I found it more rewarding than the 1983 movie. I would thoroughly recommend adding a copy of this DVD to your library.

Kevin Kline is surely the greatest Pirate King ever.

I didn't realise this was available on DVD - I'll have to look for it now. I agree with you, the 1983 movie is great but Pirates belongs on the stage with an audience!

I'm not sure with the play, so can someone tell me why the guy singing can't see or hear them? Also of they are hiding from him why are they singing?

@tonywinner They just sang a song at the dynamic of forte (loud) about how quiet they are and the "modern major-general" thinks it came from the trees.

It could just be me, but I really feel like Rex and Kevin are stifling a laugh at the very top of this. It seems like an inside joke between the two, but I wish I knew!
